Trail Description

I-84 Trailhead
(3.2 miles – paved)

The next section of official BST starts at the Fernwood Park Trailhead. Weber Pathways is working to get a trail across the interstate and the Weber River, but for now from the parking lot you have to head south on US Highway 89. After 2 miles turn left onto Valley View Dr., go north and follow the street as it S-curves up the hill into Hobbs Canyon. Turn right at the top and head down the dirt road at the end of the street.

Layton Ridge Dr Trailhead
(1.3 miles – dirt)

This dirt road is labeled as the BST on the Davis County Trails Master Plan, however the future of this section is unclear. This section is also rarely used due to the lack of an easy connection to the Fernwood Park Trailhead. Follow the road south until it exits near the water tank. You have a couple of options here. You can leave the dirt road onto Snoqualmie Dr., continue south onto Fernwood Dr. and then to the end of the road to the trailhead at Fernwood Park, or you can climb to the water tanks and find the faint path that crosses the ravine and joins the BST/Great Western Trail. Going south on this trail leads to Fernwood Park, while taking the trail east leads to the top of the mountain.

Fernwood Park Trailhead
(1.8 miles – dirt)

The trail that goes north from the park is the Great Western Trail, which climbs to the top of the mountain. To continue south follow the wide single track out of the park and cross the bridge at Kay’s Creek. Climb out of the canyon and continue south to Snow Creek. Watch out; there is no bridge on this one. Cruise up the sandy trail above the gravel pit. At the south end of the gravel pit a well-defined trail ascends from the Adams Canyon Trailhead.

Adams Canyon Trailhead
(1.75 miles – dirt)

Keep moving south to the bridge over Holmes Creek. (This bridge was flown in by the Utah National Guard.) Shortly after the trail climbs out of the canyon it splits. The main route runs downhill to the East Mountain Wild Park Trailhead, while the other route climbs a little and continues south. This upper trail ends in 1.75 miles at Baer Canyon, just past the “D” on the mountain. On the south side of Baer Canyon there are water tanks and a combination of service road, double-track, and single-track leads all the way to Shepard Canyon. However, crossing Baer Canyon is nearly impossible. This crossing is on the Davis County Trails Master Plan, so hopefully in the near future a trail section will be constructed here. For now, however, to continue south take the lower trail through East Mountain Park and out onto 600 North.

East Mountain Wild Park Trailhead
(2.1 miles – paved)

Descend 600 N to Mountain Rd. Follow Mountain Rd. to East Oaks Dr. Turn left and climb to Davis Blvd.

Baer Canyon Trailhead
(2.5 miles – dirt and paved)

Head south to the end of the road and continue south on the dirt road. Take the first left to the high road. The dirt ends at Bella Vista Dr. Continue to the end of this street where the trail continues just to the right of the enormous house. Stay on the high path until you reach the water storage pond, then descend into Farmington Canyon. Climb the canyon road to its junction with Skyline Dr.

Farmington Canyon Trailhead
(2.5 miles – dirt)

Take Skyline Dr. south above Farmington. After a few small ravines and a lot of level going, the road ends at Little Valley Rd.

Intersecting Trails

Kay’s Creek from the Fernwood Park Trailhead

The trail is about four miles in length with an elevation gain of 3480 feet. It is for hardcore hikers. A creek is at the bottom of the canyon and scrub oak provides some shade. The trail ties into the Great Western Trail at the top, which heads south. There are picnic facilities at the trailhead.

Adams Canyon

Adams Canyon is best known for its waterfall. This is a moderately strenuous hike of about 2 hours round trip.

Baer Canyon

This trail leads to creek and crosses it several times. The trail is six to seven miles with an elevation gain of 4400 feet. It ties into the Great Western Trail.

Farmington Canyon Road

Comprised of three Wasatch-Cache National Forest roads. The south start/finish is in Bountiful. In Bountiful, take 400 N east to 1300 E. Turn north onto the Ward Canyon Road.
